Reflection of The class and Mentoring Sessions

Today in class, we did four different activities trying to figure out where we are in our skills in reading and memorizing. I did a test on figuring out how I learn best by Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic. My results were kind of surprising because I have always thought I was more of a auditory listener but it turned out that I’m more of a visual and Kinesthetic learner. I can see myself as a kinesthetic leaner because I love to do hands-on activities to learn the activity better. When I took the brain test on whether I’m more left and right hemisphere. At the end of my test I figured out I am more of a left side hemisphere which means I am more organized, be more analytical and use more logic. The internet activity that we were supposed to do was to show us what IQ we were, I found it very confusing and not accurate. When I took the test it ended during the middle of test as I was answering one of the questions and in the end they told me the IQ was 104 over 100. To me that is not right, I know I am not above 100 IQ or however they scale the scores. In my stress test, I found that I am in the mild life crisis section, but some of the events they had their, well most of them, did not apply to me. Also, some of the points to me should have been higher like the financial problems, and they should have listed problems with relationships, and friendships. Those two are more accurate to this time of life. As for the Parts 1 and 2 and introduction, all this is review to me, I just have a hard time taking test and exams, so that is why I am in this class. I have passed all the quizzes on the publisher’s website up to chapter 4. I believe that by reading to the children it will also help me even more, with vocabulary, skills, and reading better aloud. In some cases people have trouble reading aloud, like I do and by doing this it will help me read better aloud to someone or to myself.

On Monday we got into our groups and got together and planned a lesson plan for our partners. It was kind of confusing in the beginning on what the teacher wanted us to do, but after another explanation I got it. I planned a lesson for my own sake, and then I planned a Comprehension Test for the book I read to the kids which was “The Giving Tree”. On Tuesday we got the library, and picked out our kids for each group that came which was 3 groups, 3 kids. At first it was kind of nerve wrecking, but after a while I got use to it and became easy. I read to the kids, got to know each one on how old they are, what their favorite subject is, and what they like to do for fun. After I read them the book, I asked how they liked it, whether it was good or bad, then gave them the test and asked them if they knew what the four modes of writing was, and most of the students I had did know the four modes of writing. The vocabulary was pretty easy in the book I read so they knew what words I was talking about. On Wednesday we did more of the online quizzes for the chapters and worked on group work for the mentoring, and reading to the kids. We had to choose our story from the class book and find a book that matched it. The story I read about was about a teenage boy who goes through the tough times of transporting a kidney for his grandma.  On Thursday the 16th of June in my mentor lessons today, I taught them what I got out of the chapter reading I had which was caring and giving. In my reading in the class book it was about a football player who quit football and when his grandma got diabetes he offered to give his own Kidney to his Grandma to help her get better and see again and care for herself. He wanted his fun Grandma back. So in the reading to the Students I read them the book “The Magic School Bus: Inside the Body” The reason I choose this book was because it was about the body, I thought it would cover the kidney but I was wrong, if I had more time finding a book about the kidney or someone giving a certain organ to someone to live would have better. One of the Kids I had didn’t seem to interested in the book and the reading session because I found out afterwards that he did not know how to read English very well, so I was teaching him some English words.

On Monday we went over what was good for the past week and what we need to work on. Also, Ms. Salsedo showed us a clip of the pictures she took from the week before. I believe after we got the first week out of the way all the stress levels went down on everyone. Since it was new to us and new to the teacher everything went smoothly from there on. We also went over the new section in our book and pick a reading. The reading was kind of hard to have like last week because we only had a day to choose, If we got a week advance or a couple days advance on what section we were doing we would be able to find the perfect book. On Tuesday I read "The butterfly" It was about this girl and her mom helping a Jewish family get out of the war and safe. The kids seemed to like it and remember the vocabulary. On wed we did the same thing as Monday but different reading to get ready for the last day of reading. On Thursday we read to the kids and they did not want to leave us. They wanted to keep hanging out with us, we had a lot of fun that day, after we read we had some fun and play games and played around.

Monday we just went over the review and reflection of the past few weeks, and we worked on our websites for the assignment. I believe this class made me a better reader for reading aloud to people. I was more comfortable and learned to slow my pace down. The only reason I took this class was because I did not pass the placement test and is a bad test taker.  I believe since I am a better reader aloud that I will do good in the next class.
